Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and line an 8-inch (20 cm) square baking pan with parchment paper.
In a heatproof bowl, melt the butter and chocolate together over low heat (or in the microwave). Stir until smooth, then let it cool slightly.
In another bowl, whisk the eggs, sugar, and vanilla until light and slightly fluffy.
Add the melted chocolate mixture into the egg mixture and stir until combined.
Sift in the flour and salt, then gently fold until just incorporated (do not overmix).
If using nuts, fold them in.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
Bake for 25–30 minutes. The top should be set with a shiny crust, but the inside should stay fudgy.
Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.
