Ingredients
Cake
1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box)
1/2 cup vegetable oil
3 large eggs
1 cup water
Caramel Filling
1 (14 oz) bag soft caramels (unwrapped)
1/2 cup heavy cream
Toppings
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2: Prepare the Cake Batter
In a large mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, vegetable oil, eggs, and water. Mix according to the package instructions until smooth and well combined.

Step 3: Bake the First Layer
Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until the top is set and no longer shiny. Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes.

Step 4: Prepare the Caramel Filling
While the first layer of the cake is baking, melt the soft caramels and heavy cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring constantly until smooth. This should take about 5-7 minutes.

Step 5: Add the Caramel and Pecans
Pour the melted caramel mixture evenly over the partially baked cake layer. Sprinkle 1/2 cup chopped pecans over the caramel.

Step 6: Add the Second Layer
Carefully spread the remaining cake batter over the caramel and pecans, covering them completely.

Step 7: Bake the Cake
Return the baking dish to the oven and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let the cake cool completely.

Step 8: Add the Toppings
Once the cake is cool, sprinkle the remaining chopped pecans and chocolate chips over the top. Place the baking dish back in the oven for 2-3 minutes to soften the chocolate chips, then use a spatula to gently spread the melted chocolate over the top.

Step 9: Serve
Allow the cake to cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing. Serve and enjoy!

Cook Notes
Caramel: Be sure to stir the caramel constantly while melting to prevent burning. You can also use store-bought caramel sauce if you prefer a shortcut.
Cake Mix: Feel free to use your favorite brand of chocolate cake mix, or substitute with a homemade chocolate cake batter if you prefer.
Topping: Adding the toppings while the cake is still warm will help the chocolate chips melt slightly, making it easier to spread.
