Bathrooms are one of the most used spaces in our homes, but small mistakes in their upkeep can lead to plumbing problems, health risks, and unnecessary expenses. Here are the most common bathroom habits to avoid—and what you can do instead.
1. Flushing Wipes Labeled “Flushable”
Despite the name, most “flushable” wipes do not disintegrate like toilet paper. Instead, they can cause blockages in pipes and sewage systems, creating costly “fatbergs.” These clogs not only damage plumbing but can also lead to local flooding and environmental hazards. Best practice: Dispose of wipes in the trash.
2. Storing Toothbrush on the Counter
Keeping your toothbrush near the toilet exposes it to airborne bacteria released when flushing. Germs can easily land on bristles and enter your mouth. Best practice: Store your toothbrush in a cabinet or use a ventilated cover, and keep it at least six feet away from the toilet.
3. Pouring Bleach into Septic Systems
Bleach may be effective for cleaning, but it destroys beneficial bacteria in septic tanks that break down waste. Without these microbes, your system can clog and back up. Best practice: Use septic-safe cleaners instead.
4. Leaving the Shower Curtain Open
When left bunched up, shower curtains trap moisture in folds, encouraging mold and mildew growth. Best practice: Spread the curtain out fully after each use so it dries evenly.
5. Using Too Much Toilet Paper
